Stitching a Future: Chandra Rekha’s Story

Chandra Rekha lives in a slum community where daily survival is a constant challenge. Her husband, once the main provider for the family, is no longer able to work due to ongoing health problems. With no steady income, the family was pushed into poverty, unsure of how they would meet their basic needs.

Worried about her children’s future and burdened by the weight of responsibility, Chandra Rekha felt trapped. During this time, the Connexions project began organising a community meeting in her neighbourhood. The Connexions project, known for its deep engagement with slum communities, aims to empower women through skill-building, income opportunities, and personal growth.

Recognising her need, the team offered Chandra Rekha the opportunity to join a skills training program in stitching. With no prior experience but a strong willingness to learn, she embraced the opportunity. The training focused on practical skills, and she quickly learned how to stitch blankets with care and precision. For every completed piece, she received payment, allowing her to earn a regular income for the first time.

With her earnings, Chandra Rekha began to support her family. She ensured her children could continue their education, enrolling them in school and providing for their tutoring needs. Today, her children are pursuing college degrees, a future she once thought was out of reach.

The transformation has gone beyond just financial relief. Through the Connexions project, Chandra Rekha gained confidence, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Connexions continues to stand out as a project that does more than just provide training. It builds skills, empowers families economically, and helps individuals reclaim their sense of self-worth. Chandra Rekha’s story is one of many that show how investing in one person’s potential can uplift an entire family.
