Rekha’s Story: Accessing HIV Care and Support at the Community Care Center
Rekha, 40, lives in Howrah and is the mother of two daughters, aged 16 and 14. Her husband tested HIV positive, while both daughters tested HIV negative at an Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre.
When Rekha visited the Community Care Center in Howrah for a pregnancy test, the staff provided reproductive health counselling and referred her to the Polyclinic. Following medical advice, she underwent an HIV test, which returned a positive result.
The Community Care Center immediately provided HIV counselling and support services. Rekha was referred to the Comprehensive Care Center, linked to Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), and enrolled in regular medical check-ups. She and her family also received ongoing counselling to support their emotional and health needs.
Today, Rekha’s health is stable with continuous ART, and her daughters remain HIV negative. Her family continues to receive care through the Community Care Center’s HIV support program. Rekha’s story highlights the importance of accessible HIV testing, ART services, and holistic family care in Howrah and surrounding communities.
